Falling in Love with Fictional Men

Come on, admit it.  We all do this to some extent.  Whose heart hasn’t beaten faster when Daniel Craig comes on the screen, get a little obsessed with everything he’s been in, or have a life-size cut out of him in your bedroom?  Okay, that last one might be only me.  But it’s not like I went out and bought him (though I totally would have).  I won Daniel Craig at a writer’s conference.  Talk about inspiration.

Anyway, Daniel Craig isn’t what this post is about, though I think that would be a great idea.

What do you do when you fall in love with your hero?

In my recent book, MOOSED UP, I have one hot Alaska Wildlife Refuge Office, Lynx Maiski.  He’s a different hero for me.  Alpha male when he needs to be, but perfectly fine with the woman in his life calling the shots.  He’s sweet and caring and wants to please.  Growing up with three sisters, he is well-rounded, yet bad ass and tough as Alaska requires a man in his position to be.  I love him!  I love him so much that writing on my next book feels like I’m cheating.  I want to go back and play with Lynx.  But his story is finished.  Hell, it’s out.

So, how does a writer move on and embrace writing a new man?

One lucky commenter will receive a digital copy of MOOSED UP so you can have a chance to fall in love with Lynx too.

MOOSED UP is available now at:
 Barnes & Noble http://bit.ly/JyuXDi.

Stay out of the woods...the moose are loose and the men are hungry.
Nurse Practitioner Eva Stuart’s life is messed-up. She found her fiancé in bed with her best friend Jeremy, which has killed her confidence as a desirable woman and brought her judgment into question when it comes to men. Needing a change of scenery, she leaves Cincinnati behind for the wilds of Alaska and opts for running a medical clinic in a remote town. Her life quickly changes from messed-up to moosed-up as nature takes a stab at her.

Wildlife Refuge Officer Lynx Maiski is big... and hot... and hungry for a mate. He’s more than willing to show Eva just how sexy she is. After all, sometimes what a street-smart woman really needs is a forest-smart mountain man. But he’s keeping a secret that seems destined to ruin his chances at love.

Soon they are dealing with small town interference, a sun that refuses to set, deadly poachers, out of control lust, and a matchmaking moose on the loose.

First, I love the cover. It's so funny. I have the book but haven't read it yet. I'm on a nutty deadline, but I can't wait.

I think all writers fall a little in love with their heroes. I adore mine. If you think about it, we're so of course he's going to appeal to us too. It's like an imaginary male harem. Move on to the next hero knowing you can always come back and visit the others.

okay that was a screwed up comment. I meant, "If you think about it, we're creating someone who is appealing to our heroine, so of course he's going to be appealing to us."

What do we do when we break-up in real life? As an author we have an advantage. We don't have to hang at bars or do online dating. We just create our "rebound hero." Someone new in every way to make us forget the one we left behind. Of course Hero A can always come back for a visit when you need a "quickie" and you don't have to tell Hero B until you're done with him. Then it's "what's behind Door No. 3." As authors, we never get "dumped." Loved Moosed-Up. Read it in one day while riding on the back of hubby's Harley.

Anita, I got suck on "Imaginary Male Harem." Awesome way to look at it. And the way I'm viewing my heroes from now on! Thank you.

Joelene, I love that you read my book on the back of a Harley! That is hot! And now I'm dying to see what is behind Door No. 3. The "quickie" wasn't a bad visual either. :)

Sounds like a fun book to read. I'm sure you will create and fall in love with your next Hero. :

Hi Mischelle! I need to figure out how to love my next hero. He is different, as in that he's dead. I actually killed him in another book. So I think he kind of hates me. What can I say, every relationship has issues.

Kerrigan Byrne said...

I try to take this on as a challenge. I'm in a relationship with my current hero, so I have to make the next one EVEN better and ever more challenging so that he can distract me...

Boy, that's getting to be a tall order. :p

Male harem, here I come. It's going to be hard to keep their names straight...

Great Cover, Tiff!
Yes, my heros haunt me long after I write, "The End."
Starting another story helps, though. But as Anita says, you can always go back and visit. LOL

I love your title! And I think I'm already falling in love with Lynx!!
Great job Tiffinie!

Lara, good to see you here. My cover makes me smile every dang time I look at it. So darn cute. Thanks for liking it too. I'll just have to "work" on the new guy, while secretly "visiting" the last one.

Thank you, Stephanie! Lynx seems to be capturing hearts. He's even made his way down under and grabbed a few women's attention.

Love this book! Not finished, but close.
Lynx is a winner. If there is a male harem, I want Tiffanie to help choose the roster of men. I think you have a good eye, or instincts, maybe both.
LOL

Woohoo, Sandy! Thank you. I believe I'm up for that. :)

Hero Love triangles ... Male harems ... On a Harley! And mention of the ultimate man candy AKA Lynx. I LOVE this post!

Tiffinie Helmer said...

Yes, Wendy, this has morphed into a great post. Thanks to all the "inspiring" comments!

I have a hard time leaving my guys behind, too! Especially if I've only written a short story about them. Keeping a harem sounds good to me! And I love Kerrigan's idea of making each hero hotter to distract from our former imaginary lovers. It is a tall order, but such a fun challenge. :D

Your hero in Moosed Up Sounds like he's one we all could fall in love with. Isn't it funny that there are so many heroes to fall for and I know I seem to, but then my real life hero does something pretty nice and I'm glad he's mine. Good luck with your book -- would love to read it.

Tiffinie Helmer said...

Thank you Unknown, or can I call you Cindy? :) Yes, making the next hero better is the challenge. Give me some more caffeine and chocolate and I think I'll be up to it.

Tiffinie Helmer said...

KR, I'm working on getting MOOSED UP and IMPACT into your hands. :) I guess you could call me fickle because I do fall in love a lot.
